It All Comes Down To This!

What happens in Vegas, brings people to Roanoke for the #SCGPC.

That may not be as catchy as the traditional Las Vegas cliché, but I'm sure Caleb Scherer doesn't mind. For Scherer, qualifying for the #SCGPC via Open Series points was a long shot at best. In order to do so, Caleb needed Eric Hawkins to have a terrible tournament, Joe Lossett to win the #SCGINVI, and Caleb himself needed to make the Top 4. Talk about long odds; the only thing more difficult than that would be him winning the #SCGINVI himself!

So about that...

What makes Caleb's win so impressive is his resolve. Starting your most important tournament of the year at 3-3 with no more losses to give is a position from which I've seen many give up. It's easy to think, "This just isn't my weekend", but Caleb did exactly the opposite. Two more wins on Day One brought him to 5-3. Seven in a row on Day Two brought his record to 12-3 and the ability to draw into the elimination rounds. But Scherer still had plenty of work to do.

The quarterfinals brought Alex Smith and his Jeskai Black deck. Caleb won 3-2. Then it was Casey Pordes and his Four-Color Rally deck. Caleb won again, 3-2. Finally, Vidianto Wijaya, the only player hotter than Caleb in the tournament with a 14-1-1 record throughout the Swiss rounds. Caleb won. Again. 3-1. And now he is $10,000 richer, will have his likeness on a card for all to enjoy, and, most importantly, is headed to the #SCGPC to be one of sixteen battling it out for $50,000.

It's crazy to think the #SCGPC is already here, but it sure is. And Caleb Scherer is the sixteenth and final person to qualify. Will he win it? There's only one way to find out - join me, Patrick Sullivan, Matthias Hunt, and the rest of the @SCGLive crew at twitch.tv/scglive to watch it all unfold!

Conducting A Séance

By now you've probably heard all the buzz about Séance. Is this a card that can be broken? Is it even worth trying to break? And if it is any good, are there even any financial implications? Chas Andres is here to breakdown all things Séance related just in time for Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch.

In A World With Stoneforge Mystic

Stoneforge Mystic is the next Grand Prix promo. That is fact, but it's anyone's guess if it will it be unbanned in Modern. Imagine for a moment that it will be: what would decks with Stoneforge Mystic even look like? Michael Majors is here to answer that question.

My Near Miss

At the end of Day One at the #SCGINVI, Gerry Thompson was the only person with an unblemished record at 8-0. Given his #SCGINVI history, it looked like another Top 8 was on the way... but it didn't happen. What went wrong? GerryT explains how things went astray and how to move forward when disappointment strikes.

Match of the Week

It's only appropriate that a game played for high stakes takes place in Las Vegas.

One match to decide who would make it to the #SCGPC. Would it be Vidianto Wijaya, the first overall seed on the #SCGINVI? Or Caleb Scherer, someone who started off 3-3 and then rattled off nine straight wins to make the Top 8? Watch and find out!
