| | Paris and beyond A note to thank you and reflect on a great milestone... which we now must translate into action! On Saturday, December 12th in Paris we achieved something fantastic that we would not have believed possible only a few months ago. One hundred and ninety five governments agreed to a global ambitious deal to combat climate change. This is a crucial step for taking decisive climate action for nature and for people. The Paris agreement doesn't only commit governments to change, it sends a strong signal to markets and companies that the transition from the carbon era is well under way... and irreversible. I would like to share my reflections with you, our WWF supporters, without whom, WWF would not have had the strength to influence this historic achievement. Great job! We can take pride in knowing we played our part, both in the conference room and in the global public dialogue. Millions of you posted, tweeted and shared. And you mobilised around the world to demand action on climate change. Including the WWF/ Earth Hour's "Tweet Your Leader" campaign, the "Global People's Climate March" and over 2,400 events in 175 countries. And your donations gave us the means we needed to engage and lobby the governments for an ambitious deal. You made a huge difference and our collective voice was strong. Here is your story. Thank you so much for your support, we could not have done it without you. | | Now the pace of transition is key. Yet what happens after is key. Alone, the collective pledges of governments are not enough if we cannot reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. We know that to convert the Paris agreement into real change will require more pressure, in-depth monitoring and continued large scale mobilisation of people. However, the recognition of the problem, together with the ambition of the response contained in the Paris agreement, gives us the best ever opportunity to contain climate change within the boundary that science tells us we should absolutely not trespass. Read the whole story here. I am looking forward to the future as we continue to push the climate change agenda, with our next big milestone being Earth Hour in March. We are living through a great period in our history and one that has the potential to build a safe future for people and nature. Warm greetings to all and, again thank you for your engagement and support! Marco | | | | | | |
