Top 10 Standard All-Stars in Battle for Zendikar!

Posted On // Leave a Comment

Dear Theros block. You will be missed.

Think of all we're losing with the departure of Theros block. Courser of Kruphix? Gone, but certainly not forgotten. Elspeth, Sun's Champion? Jim Davis and control players everywhere will miss you. Temples? No more scrying for free for us. Bile Blight? It sure will be nice to draw two of the same card again! Thoughtseize?

Well, they can't all be missed...

Theros block brought a lot to Magic over the past two years, and while Thoughtseize was certainly frustrating at times, I can't remember a more dynamic format in all my years of playing. Any deck was a reasonable option—U/R Sphinx's Tutelage won a Grand Prix for goodness sake!—and how those options were built was even more compelling to watch. One week, Abzan Aggro is dead. The next? It's the best deck in the format. Best of luck finding another format where that happens!

But that's what we're all hoping for once Battle for Zendikar enters the fray. Many have been critical of Magic's newest set, but only time will tell how things will shake out. One thing we know for sure—the mana is as a complicated as it has ever been. It's going to be a ton of fun to watch just how far some will go to try and play their favorite cards. Is playing three colors the default? Four? Five? Who knows!

So let's start to find out this weekend at your local prerelease. If you're in the Roanoke area, I certainly recommend heading to the StarCity Game Center, but if you can't make it, be sure to go *somewhere* and start cracking those Expeditions!

First Pick At Battle For Zendikar: White

With Battle For Zendikar prereleases right around the corner, it's time to crack those packs and build some sealed decks. And who better to help prepare you than Pro Tour Khans of Tarkir champion Ari Lax? He is breaking down Magic's newest set and begins with explaining why Sheer Drop might be the best common in the set.

Fact Or Fiction: Battle For Zendikar Approaches!

Michael Majors and Ross Merriam are quickly becoming friends, but that doesn't mean they won't battle it out in "Fact Or Fiction." We shall see whose side you're on when it comes to their dissection of the mana in our new Standard format and whether Theros/Khans of Tarkir Standard is the best Standard format of all time.

Building Eldrazi Ramp

With all this talk about Battle lands, Devoid, Ingest, and Awaken, it seems like we've all forgotten that there are Eldrazi in this set. Everyone except Tom Ross of course! It may seem strange to see the Mono-Red player choose a ramp strategy, but if he's trying to ramp instead of slinging burn spells, perhaps you should be as well.

Match of the Week

Siege Rhino and the Abzan came out in force at the SCG Standard Open in Milwaukee, but the swan song for Theros and Magic 2015 saw the Sultai reach the finals instead, led by Sam Braatz. Opposing Braatz and his clan? The purity of fire, a Mono-Red Aggro deck piloted by Jory White. It's Satyr Wayfinder vs. Stoke the Flames as two staples on their way out vie for supremacy one last time!

What I'd Play At The Open Series

The Battle for Zendikar Prerelease is right around the corner, but after the first Limited fun is done there's Constructed to think about. Here are my Top 10 Battle for Zendikar cards for Standard!

#10 Bring to Light

Bring to Light card preview

I think this card has a lot of potential as a tutor effect for a combo deck. I've seen lots of talk about the potential Modern applications, but I think it also has a shot at breaking out in Standard as well. It might not be a breakout card right away, but I would keep an eye on this card as the next set enters the Standard mix.

#9 Greenwarden of Murasa

Greenwarden of Murasa card preview

This card has the potential to be a great top end option in green control strategies. Similar to how Den Protector works as a versatile late-game draw, I think this could be a powerful effect in Sultai or Abzan control strategies. This card is harder to splash than Den Protector but comes with a bigger body and second Regrowth effect.

#8 Woodland Wanderer

Woodland Wanderer card preview

Woodland Wanderer is a surprisingly powerful four-drop that unfortunately has to compete with Siege Rhino for a place in Standard decks. Even so, I think that the great mana bases allowed by the nonbasic lands in the new format will be enough for this hard-hitting creature to see play in a few decks. I wouldn't be surprised if classically three-color decks like Abzan starting splashing the other two colors in order to get the most of these powerful Converge effects.

#7 Planar Outburst

Planar Outburst card preview

Even at five mana, Wrath of God is still Wrath of God. The newest version also comes with the ability to gain a land-creature late in the game. It's also worth noting that the second copy you play actually works in synergy with the first, since it doesn't kill any of your awakened lands. I think there will be a U/W or Esper Control deck in the new format, and this card will likely replace End Hostilities in it.

#6 Painful Truths

Painful Truths card preview

Painful Truths has the potential to be a great draw spell in the right strategy. Abzan Control and other strategies are likely to be splashing more colors in the future, making this a great card draw spell that comes with some added flexibility.

#5 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar card preview

The newest version of Gideon comes with three great abilities: an immediate Glorious Anthem ultimate, a 2/2 every turn, and the ability to hit for five. All three of these abilities are great and Gideon should easily find a home in a few different strategies. The Mono-White deck played by Sam Black at Worlds feels like a natural home for this card.

#4 Ob Nixilis Reignited

Ob Nixilis Reignited card preview

Ob Nixilis Reignited is a great, albeit slow, planeswalker that should find a home in a few different control decks. As a planeswalker, he does everything that you would want, answering creatures and providing a card advantage effect each turn he stays alive. At five mana he's not likely to reach the full playset in most maindecks, but I would be surprised to not see people playing two or three copies of him when Battle for Zendikar becomes Standard-legal.

#3 Lumbering Falls

Lumbering Falls card preview

A lot of players seemed disappointed when this was the first enemy-colored creature land revealed, but I was super excited. This card fits perfectly into the Sultai decks that I love. Hexproof is an extremely relevant ability since it stops your opponent from being able to answer your attack with an instant-speed targeted removal spell.

#2 Ruinous Path

Ruinous Path card preview

This removal spell may not seem flashy, but it will easily be one of the most played cards in the new format. When Hero's Downfall rotates out, this card will immediately replace it as the go-to answer for both creatures and Planeswalkers. Sorcery speed is a downgrade, but the ability to use awaken to mitigate flood in the late game is likely a fair tradeoff.

#1 The Battle Lands

Canopy Vista card preview

Battle for Zendikar is a set that is heavily influenced by lands, so it should be no surprise that the new dual lands are in the #1 slot for my countdown. This is the first time in the history of Standard that a cycle of fetchlands and a cycle of lands with two basic land types have been legal at the same time. These lands are going to have a huge effect on the format as they will allow of decks to have better mana bases than ever before. Remember what I said about Woodland Wanderer and players splashing more colors for Converge? These are the lands that will make it possible.

Road To The Player's Championship

Zendikar isn't the only thing the players on the StarCityGames.com® Open Series are battling for. They're also battling for a spot in our year-end Players' Championship, and with a new Standard on the horizon, the heat is picking up on the Season Four race for a spot. While things will simmer down this week, due to the Battle for Zendikar prereleases, the race will be on fire as soon as we get to #SCGINDY and the new Standard format. So let's take the time to break down the points race as it stands today.

There are currently nine open spots up for grabs in the Players' Championship, but only eight that depend on the points race (since one spot will go to the Season Four Invitational Winner). If the cutoff were today, the following players would be in:

  • Gerard Fabiano (Season Four Points Leader)

  • Hunter Nance

  • Jonathan Morawski

  • Todd Anderson

  • Ross Merriam

  • Joe Lossett

  • Eric Hawkins

  • Chris VanMeter

Players' Championship Leaderboard

With Logan Mize being the first one out, followed closely by Rudy Briksza. However, Logan is only two points behind CVM, and Rudy is only one point behind Logan, meaning the race is as tight as ever. With nine events (eight Open Series events, and the #SCGINVI in Las Vegas), it is still anybody's race to win.

Many players have helped bolster their point totals with strong finishes on our IQ circuit. Gerard Fabiano, Eric Hawkins, and Ross Merriam have all won at least one IQ in the past week to add much-needed points to their overall totals. Others have supplemented their strong Open Series finishes with strong IQ finishes and, while not taking home the trophy, have helped their position in the race to the Players' Championship. Looking to join them? Find an IQ near you and win points and prizes today!
