Top 10 Coolest Cards from Eldritch Moon!

How about you go away, Grixis Delver?

When you think of Legacy, what do you think of? For me, it's a few different things. First, it's the power of Brainstorm and fetch lands. Then I think about how Deathrite Shaman almost single-handedly forced me to stop playing Goblins. After that? How many times I've gotten beaten down by a Delver of Secrets. And now I'm thinking to myself…

All of those cards are in Grixis Delver!

So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to see the deck pick up another SCG Tour title. Normally we see that take place in the hands of Noah Walker, but he can't win every time, so Ed Demicco decided it was his time to shine at #SCGWOR. For Demicco, the elimination rounds aren't anything new for him. #SCGWOR was his third SCG Tour Top 8, and though this is his first win, I have a feeling it won't be his last as he has shown expertise across many of Magic's formats.

But the Demicco train is going on pause for at least one weekend, as the SCG Tour goes on hiatus so that we can all start cracking Eldritch Moon booster packs. Unless you've been playing too much Pokemon GO, you know that Eldritch Moon is loaded to the brim with awesome new cards. From Planeswalkers like Liliana, the Last Hope and Tamiyo, Field Researcher to absurd value creatures like Spell Queller and Grim Flayer, Eldritch Moon isn't shy on good ones to open!

So, what am I hoping to open this weekend at the StarCityGames prerelease? Gisela and Bruna of course! How else am I supposed to beat Tom, Brad, Todd, and Gerry?!

What I'd Play At The Open Series

Spoiler season is a time of excitement, brews, and new stories. With every new set there are some cards that are so exciting that you just have to talk about them. After seeing all of the cool new cards, I narrowed them down to the ten I think are coolest. They are powerful, intriguing, and I expect them to see play across many formats, making their mark of the future of Magic.

#10 Bedlam Reveler

Bedlam Reveler card preview

Bedlam Reveler is a finisher for Burn decks. It may not be very powerful in Standard, but in Modern it can regularly be cast for two or three mana. It then refills your hand with more direct damage spells making it a wonderful finisher. This reminds me of Tasigur, the Golden Fang for burn decks.

#9 Spell Queller

Spell Queller card preview

Spell Queller is one of the exciting new spirits that could see play in Standard, or even in Modern. The ability to exile even uncounterable spells while providing a quick clock in the air allows you to gain tempo on your opponent. A 2/3 flash flyer for three is a good rate, and then attaching such a powerful ability to it makes it an incredible value.

#8 Fortune's Favor

Fortune's Favor card preview

Fortune's Favor is a new twist on the powerful Fact or Fiction. This is a wonderful source of card advantage that I expect to show up in both Standard and Modern. This gives control decks holding up counter magic an alternative if they didn't need to cast anything. There are fun mind games when the piles are split two and two, but if it is split unevenly often choosing the pile with more cards will be the right play.

#7 Harmless Offering

Harmless Offering card preview

Harmless Offering is a color shifted version of Donate, which is on the reserve list. It is a unique effect that can be used as an alternative win strategy. You can gift your opponent a Demonic Pact ready to make them lose the game. Also raising the cool factor is the adorable kitty with an evil Eldrazi tail.

#6 Thalia, Heretic Cathar

Thalia, Heretic Cathar card preview

Thalia, Heretic Cathar is a new addition to the Death and Taxes strategy in Modern and Legacy, and slots into Collected Company decks in Standard quite well. She delays opponents by a turn and stands up well in a Standard format defined by 2/3 creatures.

#5 Gisela, the Broken Blade

Gisela, the Broken Blade card preview Brisela, Voice of Nightmares card preview

Gisela, the Broken Blade's meld ability probably won't come up in Standard. Don't let that fool you, though. Without meld, she's still a miniature Baneslayer Angel, which was a force to be reckoned with. And if you've got her in a Commander deck with Bruna, the Fading Light, then Brisela, Voice of Nightmares is a heck of a payoff!

#4 Eldritch Evolution

Eldritch Evolution card preview

There's lots of excitement surrounding Eldritch Evolution as a new, fixed, version of Birthing Pod. Historically these types of effects have been very powerful but increasing the converted mana cost by two is even better. When combined with emerge cards, you can access incredibly powerful creatures fairly early. For example, a Turn 3 Matter Reshaper emerged into a Turn 4 Abundant Maw can become a Turn 5 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger with Eldritch Evolution, without ever playing a ramp spell.

#3 Tamiyo, Field Researcher

Tamiyo, Field Researcher card preview

Tamiyo, Field Researcher is an incredibly powerful new Planeswalker. Her first ability can target your creatures for card draw, or your opponent's creatures to keep them at bay. Her second ability protects herself another way, and her ultimate ability probably just wins the game. At only four mana, she will be an early and challenging threat that will need to be dealt with.

#2 Emrakul, the Promised End

Emrakul, the Promised End card preview

Emrakul, the Promised End is the marquee card of Eldritch Moon, giving you the powerful and rare ability to control your opponent for a turn. In a block built to enable delirium, there's a good chance you're casting Emrakul for only nine or ten mana. Plus, now Nahiri, the Harbinger has an Emrakul to fetch up in Modern and in Standard!

#1 Liliana, the Last Hope

Liliana, the Last Hope card preview

Our unlikely hero, Liliana, the Last Hope is evocative of Jace, Telepath Unbound in her abilities. As a three-mana Planeswalker she begins providing removal and card advantage early. What's not to love? As long as there's a deck with enough black mana to cast her on Turn 3, Liliana will be a major player in Standard.

#SCGCOL will be the debut for all of the new decks with these cards. I look forward to seeing which of these cards help to define Standard moving forward and which ones show up in the Modern and Legacy Classics. I had a hard time narrowing down to only ten coolest cards. What other cards are you excited about from the newest set? Hop on to twitter and let the world know! And, as always, happy gaming!

Road To The Player's Championship

Five players in the Top 10 of the SCG Tour Player of the Year leaderboard had big weekends at #SCGWOR, with Top 8s in the Legacy Open or Standard Classic for Joe Lossett, Jeff Hoogland, Todd Stevens, Tom Ross, and Kevin Jones.

Hoogland continued to increase his lead atop the Player of the Year leaderboard, notching another Top 8—this time in Legacy, giving him Open Top 8s in all three formats on the SCG Tour this year. Lossett did his part in chasing Hoogland down, defeating him in the quarterfinals as he earned 20 SCG Points in his Top-4 finish. Lossett overtook Gerry Thompson for second place in the Player of the Year race, while moving up to ninth-place in the Season Two race.

Todd Stevens moved up to sixth in the POY race after securing his first Legacy Open Top 8 this weekend, playing Infect after working with Tom Ross over the past two weeks. While Stevens fell in the quarterfinals to the eventual winner, Ed Demicco, his weekend pushed him into fifth in the Season Two race, giving him a shot at earning a Players' Championship invite via Season Two.

SCG Tour Leaderboard

Jones and Ross both made Top 8 of the Standard Classic after having a rough Day 1 in the Legacy Open. The two players met in the semifinals with Jones getting the best of the Boss, before losing to Mike Sigrist in the finals. Ross earned eight SCG Points with his finish, staying in fourth place in the POY race and second place in the Season Two race. Jones, on the other hand, moved up to ninth on the year while jumping up to fourth in the Season Two race.

The SCG Tour takes a break this weekend for the Eldritch Moon prerelease, but will be back in action next weekend for #SCGCOL, including the first Standard Open with Eldritch Moon. Follow the race to the Players' Championship at @SCGLive!
