Spoiler season is a time of excitement, brews, and new stories. With every new set there are some cards that are so exciting that you just have to talk about them. After seeing all of the cool new cards, I narrowed them down to the ten I think are coolest. They are powerful, intriguing, and I expect them to see play across many formats, making their mark of the future of Magic. #10 Bedlam Reveler
Bedlam Reveler is a finisher for Burn decks. It may not be very powerful in Standard, but in Modern it can regularly be cast for two or three mana. It then refills your hand with more direct damage spells making it a wonderful finisher. This reminds me of Tasigur, the Golden Fang for burn decks. #9 Spell Queller
Spell Queller is one of the exciting new spirits that could see play in Standard, or even in Modern. The ability to exile even uncounterable spells while providing a quick clock in the air allows you to gain tempo on your opponent. A 2/3 flash flyer for three is a good rate, and then attaching such a powerful ability to it makes it an incredible value. #8 Fortune's Favor
Fortune's Favor is a new twist on the powerful Fact or Fiction. This is a wonderful source of card advantage that I expect to show up in both Standard and Modern. This gives control decks holding up counter magic an alternative if they didn't need to cast anything. There are fun mind games when the piles are split two and two, but if it is split unevenly often choosing the pile with more cards will be the right play. #7 Harmless Offering
Harmless Offering is a color shifted version of Donate, which is on the reserve list. It is a unique effect that can be used as an alternative win strategy. You can gift your opponent a Demonic Pact ready to make them lose the game. Also raising the cool factor is the adorable kitty with an evil Eldrazi tail. #6 Thalia, Heretic Cathar
Thalia, Heretic Cathar is a new addition to the Death and Taxes strategy in Modern and Legacy, and slots into Collected Company decks in Standard quite well. She delays opponents by a turn and stands up well in a Standard format defined by 2/3 creatures. #5 Gisela, the Broken Blade Gisela, the Broken Blade's meld ability probably won't come up in Standard. Don't let that fool you, though. Without meld, she's still a miniature Baneslayer Angel, which was a force to be reckoned with. And if you've got her in a Commander deck with Bruna, the Fading Light, then Brisela, Voice of Nightmares is a heck of a payoff! #4 Eldritch Evolution
There's lots of excitement surrounding Eldritch Evolution as a new, fixed, version of Birthing Pod. Historically these types of effects have been very powerful but increasing the converted mana cost by two is even better. When combined with emerge cards, you can access incredibly powerful creatures fairly early. For example, a Turn 3 Matter Reshaper emerged into a Turn 4 Abundant Maw can become a Turn 5 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger with Eldritch Evolution, without ever playing a ramp spell. #3 Tamiyo, Field Researcher
Tamiyo, Field Researcher is an incredibly powerful new Planeswalker. Her first ability can target your creatures for card draw, or your opponent's creatures to keep them at bay. Her second ability protects herself another way, and her ultimate ability probably just wins the game. At only four mana, she will be an early and challenging threat that will need to be dealt with. #2 Emrakul, the Promised End
Emrakul, the Promised End is the marquee card of Eldritch Moon, giving you the powerful and rare ability to control your opponent for a turn. In a block built to enable delirium, there's a good chance you're casting Emrakul for only nine or ten mana. Plus, now Nahiri, the Harbinger has an Emrakul to fetch up in Modern and in Standard! #1 Liliana, the Last Hope
Our unlikely hero, Liliana, the Last Hope is evocative of Jace, Telepath Unbound in her abilities. As a three-mana Planeswalker she begins providing removal and card advantage early. What's not to love? As long as there's a deck with enough black mana to cast her on Turn 3, Liliana will be a major player in Standard. #SCGCOL will be the debut for all of the new decks with these cards. I look forward to seeing which of these cards help to define Standard moving forward and which ones show up in the Modern and Legacy Classics. I had a hard time narrowing down to only ten coolest cards. What other cards are you excited about from the newest set? Hop on to twitter and let the world know! And, as always, happy gaming! |
