Standard's Pro Tour glow has worn off, and now the Magic world is all about Modern! #SCGBALT marks a return to the format that will define Season Two on the SCG Tour, and our writers are all over it! Conley Woods continues his life's work of trying to shatter the format from an unseen angle and Sam Black has the decks he'd take to the event with one goal in mind: victory! And if Standard is still your game and you're desperate to conquer Aetherworks Marvel, Shaheen Soorani is all over the job of bringing control to prominence! If you're only in on the main event or you're stopping by for some Standard action at Sunday's Classic, we're happy to have you! Best of luck in Baltimore!

  Mining Modern For New Decks
  By Conley WoodsTwitter

Because the various midrange, control, and aggro decks give plenty of attention to that upper tier of playable cards, as a deckbuilder, you need to be willing to look deeper. Building a deck around Lightning Bolts and Thoughtseizes and Death's Shadows is totally fine, but the chances that you happen to stumble upon the magical build that shakes everything up are slim, based purely on how many other people are trying to do the same thing. There is definitely something there, and if you do miss, you are still playing Death's Shadow and have a pretty good deck, but you also have a lower chance of hitting it out of the park. I would describe the exploration of Death's Shadow to have a high floor but a low ceiling (relative to where other Death's Shadow decks are).

Instead, I think that if you are really looking to make your mark in Modern as a deckbuilder, you should be exploring powerful cards or strategies that are not under the Tier 1 microscope. It might seem a bit strange, but our goals as deckbuilders here is almost the opposite of what it should be. The further we move away from Tier 1, the more likely we are to find a gem that is undiscovered and has the potential to blow up. We are investigating cards that are unplayed or underplayed, meaning there is more opportunity for discovery but also more opportunity for failure. In other words, we are exploring low-floor, high-ceiling territory.

  U/B Control For Standard
  By Shaheen SooraniFacebookTwitter

Fumigate is a card I've hated since its arrival in Standard. I often played it due to lack of other options, but that has changed. Both the Mono-Black and B/W Zombie decks require a critical mass of creatures to kill. Flaying Tendrils is extremely ineffective at dealing with the Zombie hoard because one copy of Liliana's Mastery thwarts it immediately. Yahenni's Expertise, however, gets through those pumps easily. I know some are worried about multiple lords being present at the time of our sweeper, but that isn't ever the case.

Playing a control deck gives a few perks, and one of those is the ability to kill a creature every turn with ease. The number of times a Yahenni's Expertise didn't wipe the battlefield against Zombies in testing is in the low single digits. The free spell off it is rarely utilized, but if you're one of those lucky mages with a Liliana, the Last Hope in your hand, it's a very happy day. The best thing about this sweeper is that it's great against Marvel decks as well. The Temur deck, probably the most popular of them all, contains ten to twelve non-Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger creatures. Each of the creatures die to Yahenni's Expertise, and that is super important for U/B Control's viability argument. Often against these decks, they are stopped from ever resolving an Aetherworks Marvel, but they eventually slay us with an army of Thopter tokens from a Whirler Virtuoso.

Recommendations

Historically, a lack of sideboard options has been a serious concern for colorless decks, and sideboard cards are often strong motivations to play various colors (especially white), but Modern has gotten to the point where an impressively robust sideboard is available using only spells that don't require colored mana.

There are a lot of viable heuristics for choosing a deck. In Modern, people adapt, but they do so fairly slowly, and the developments at last week's Classic could fly somewhat under the radar, so getting in on the new tech that was successful in a physical tournament is a viable approach. The next option is looking at what the most successful people on Magic Online are doing, which brought me to Eldrazi Tron.

A third option is to ask friends what they like. When you do that, you should expect that the answer you'll get will probably be an objectively lower-powered or worse-positioned deck, but you'll presumably have the advantage of being able to discuss the deck with someone who knows it well, which can be extremely important in Modern. In my case, that would probably result in playing some kind of Bant Company deck with Tireless Tracker. While you could do worse, I'm guessing Counters Company is a better option.
